11 Apr, 2021

Summer is here but so is the heat. The scorching summer heat is what makes us lazy to step out in the sun. On top of that, the resurgence in the number of cases of Covid-19 is making us more cautious of stepping out.

But there is nothing to get disheartened about. Summer is all about fun and doing different activities. Though you may be reluctant to step out of your home, there are several things that you can do, staying at home to make your summer a fun-filled one!

1) Manage Sunlight at Home

Handling the blazing sunlight can be a tedious task, especially if you live in a high-rise or an open area that is not surrounded by buildings or trees. In such a scenario you will like to stay sneaked inside an AC room but you cannot spend the entire day there! So it is important to deal with the sunlight at home.

The sunlight can be managed by adding heat-reflective film on the windows that receive direct sunlight. The curtains should also be drawn during the noon and afternoon hours when the sunlight is the strongest. This will help to keep your home cool and comfortable.

2) Rearrange Your Furniture

You may not realize but simply rearranging your furniture and decor can make your summers seem soothing. The first thing to do is change your curtains. If you have curtains of dark shades then remove them and replace them with curtains of cotton fabric and lighter shades. This will improve the summer aesthetics and also prevent your home from heating up. You could get your family members together to brainstorm on the idea of rearranging things. It will be fun to see the new ideas everyone comes up with!

The next step is to remove all the unwanted clutter. Removing broken vases, unrequired furniture and crockery can free up a lot of space. The more spacious your home becomes the more breathable it will feel.

If you are planning to change your lights, try buying LED and CFL bulbs. These are soothing over conventional bulbs because they do not produce a lot of heat. LED and CFL bulbs are available in different colours and soft shades like warm white is what you should get. It will make your home look natural and calm.

3) Eat Healthy

Eating healthy and nutritious food is very important to beat the summer heat. During summer the heat tends to make us feel restless and also affects our productivity. To deal with this, you should eat a lot of citrus fruits and green vegetables. Cucumbers, green peas, tomatoes and carrots are the vegetables that are loaded with nutrients that our body needs during summer.

Dehydration can be a major problem during the summer months. To prevent your family members from getting dehydrated, make them have lots of juice and fruits. Coconut water, fresh fruit juices and lime water can help you stay hydrated. Fruits like watermelons, grapes and melons also help a lot. They taste sweet and are also juicy!

4) Take up Gardening

You could start with gardening inside your home. It will surely become a fun activity for your family members. You just need a small area in your balcony or window to start gardening. Start with 2-3 plants that are easy to care for.

Aloe Vera, Mint, Tulasi or flowering plants like Rose, Hibiscus, Sunflower are great options for beginners. You can teach your kids to water them and add fertilizers. Taking care of these plants will be fun and exciting.

Placing them around your home will also add the much needed natural look to your home’s decor. If the pollution is making you uneasy consider getting a Snake plant. The Snake plant purifies the air inside your home and is also very easy to care for.

To develop your children’s interest in the activity make them watch gardening videos on YouTube. They can also learn how to use Mint leaves to make refreshing drinks or use the gel of the Aloe Vera plant to soften their skin.

5) Play Cosy Games

You can enjoy playing cosy and entertaining games right within the comfort of your home. There are many board games, chit-paper or adventure games that you can play with family members. You could even play the classics like Tic-Tac-Toe, Name Place Animal Thing or Rock Paper Scissors. These games are fun and keep everyone hooked to guessing the next move to make!

If you want to do some physical activity, play games like Musical Chairs, Hide and Seek and Uuch-Neech. Another exciting activity is to get some blankets and chairs together to build a tent in your home. You and your children can relax inside the cosy tent during the night!

6) Watch Sports or Movies

One of the most relaxing things to do is get your family together and watch a sport or movie. You have to make the least effort to do this activity as switching on the television is the only effort you need to make.

You can call your friends and watch your favourite sport. For those who do not like sports, movies could be your thing. Relive your childhood memories by watching the evergreen sagas like the Harry Potter Series, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, The Jungle Book or the Jurassic Park. There are so many titles that you will run out of time!
